Episode 35: The Weepy Confessions of Paul Stephani
In this episode of Super SUS, we explore one of the most unsettling cases to ever shake the Twin Cities: the crimes of the so-called Weepy Voiced Killer. Known for his chilling late-night calls to police—begging to be stopped in a high-pitched, remorseful voice—this anonymous figure terrorized Minnesota in the early 1980s.
A Trail of Violence and Voicemails
The killer's spree began in 1980 with a brutal attack that left a young woman severely injured. The following year, the murder of 18-year-old Kimberly Compton—stabbed dozens of times—sent shockwaves through the community. Soon after, other victims followed, including Barbara Simons and Kathleen Greening. Though their causes of death differed, the pattern was hauntingly consistent: extreme violence, followed by eerie confessions phoned in by a voice filled with guilt and desperation.
A Break in the Case
It wasn’t until a survivor fought back that the truth began to surface. Her brave escape, along with eyewitness accounts, led authorities to Paul Michael Stefani—a man hiding a deeply troubled past beneath an unassuming life.
A Voice Revealed
Raised in a chaotic and abusive home, Stefani claimed his violent actions were driven by inner torment. On his deathbed, he confessed to multiple attacks, including some not previously linked to him. His confessions closed several cold cases—but couldn’t erase the trauma he left behind.
